What to know if you're travelling to Italy in June

Recently updated on November 24th, 2023 at 02:59 pm

If you’re planning on travelling to Italy in June then you’re in for a treat. Think dreamy sun-soaked lunches, daily scoops of gelato and relaxed sunset walks.

Late spring in Italy is a magical time to visit. The weather should be warm but not scorching hot, the crowds thinner than during the peak of summer, and you’ll be able to dine outdoors on gorgeous seasonal produce.

From the north to the south, June is one of the best months to travel the country and explore Italy’s rich architecture, Renaissance art and ancient Roman history. Here’s what you need to know about travelling to Italy in June.

Weather in Italy in June

Across the month the temperatures gradually rise, with the June solstice marking the first day of summer around the 21st.  Expect warm, pleasant days perfect for sightseeing and, towards the end of the month, beach weather will certainly kick in. As for rain? You’d be unlucky to have more than a few days.

Italy is a big country with the north of the country bordering Switzerland with the Italian Alps, and the south closer to Africa with the island of Sicily. In Milan and Venice expect highs around 27°C (81°F) and lows of 15°C (55°F).  Rome and Florence are slightly hotter during the day, while in Sicily and the Amalfi Coast you can expect warmer highs up to 30°C (85°F) and evening lows around 21°C (70°F).

What to pack for spring in Italy

If you join one of our Italy tours in June, pack summer clothes and sandals for warm days of at least 25°C (77°F). In some destinations once the sun disappears the evening air will be cool, so it’s wise to carry a jacket or layers to take you from day to night.

To enter churches you will need to cover your shoulders, so if you are wearing a singlet or strappy dress it’s a good idea to carry a light scarf or cardigan to cover up.

Expect sunny days and little rain, so add sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to your list. Italy in late June is prime for beach days, so pack swimwear and a towel too.

Italians love to dress up, especially in the big cities, so bring a chic outfit or two to switch from tourist-mode into sophisticated Italian evenings.
